How to understand Inciter's input/output files

This page discusses the input and output files used by Inciter.

How to parameterize Inciter with input files

There are two mandatory input arguments to the Inciter executable:

  • -i <in.exo> to specify the input mesh file, and
  • -c <config.q> to specify the input control file.

The input mesh file must be in ExodusII format. MeshConv can be used to convert meshes from some other formats. The input control file uses the Lua language. See V&V for details on running inciter.

How to interpret Inciter's output files

The output file types are as follows.

  • 3D fields output in mesh nodes in ExodusII format, filenames by default: out.e-s.*, visualize with ParaView
  • 3D surface output in mesh nodes in ExodusII format, filenames by default: out-surf.*, visualize with ParaView
  • Diagnostics (integral quantities) output in text format, filename by default: diag
  • Probe time history output in text format, filenames by default: out.hist.*
  • Surface integral output in text format, filename by default: out.int
  • Edge-length probability distribution function (as a result of domain decomposition) in gnuplot format, filename by default: mesh_edge_pdf.0.txt
  • Number-of-domain-elements probability distribution function (as a result of domain decomposition) in gnuplot format, filename by default: mesh_ntet_pdf.0.txt
  • Element-volume-cube-root probability distribution function (as a result of domain decomposition) in gnuplot format, filename by default: mesh_vol_pdf.0.txt
  • Control file data parsed (as a feedback of the data parsed, interpreted, and used from the input control file) in text format, filename by default: inciter_control.log

All output files are created in the current working directory.
